Bridging Generational Gaps: A Heartwarming Heritage Day at St. Paul’s Missionary College

At Simblija Care Home, we are dedicated to fostering a vibrant and fulfilling lifestyle where our residents, find joy in  meaningful connections and shared experiences.  This week our wonderful residents embarked on a special visit to St. Paul’s Missionary College in Rabat, where they celebrated Heritage Day alongside a group of enthusiastic young students.

The event was much more than just a gathering, it was a great example of how different generations can come together, bridging gaps and creating a sense of unity through stories, traditions and laughter. It also showcased the variety of engaging and heartwarming activities available to our residents at Simblija Care Home.

A Morning of Nostalgia and Learning

Upon arrival, our residents were warmly welcomed by eager young minds, ready to learn about Malta’s past, not from textbooks, but through firsthand stories, told by those who had experienced it. The morning was filled with nostalgia as residents shared memories of traditional street games like passju (hopscotch) and boċċi (marbles), recalling a time when these simple yet joyous activities once brought entire neighborhoods together. The children listened intently, fascinated by the tales of a time before technology dominated playtime.

A Celebration of Maltese Culture

No discussion of Maltese heritage would be complete without a nod to Malta’s  rich culinary traditions. Our residents and the students engaged in lively discussions about beloved local dishes, from pastizzi and ftira to the much-loved figolli enjoyed during Easter – highlighted how food carries stories across generations, keeping traditions alive.

Music and dance also played an integral role in the day’s festivities. Traditional Maltese tunes filled the air as residents and students clapped, sang and even joined in a few simple folk dances, proving that music is universal language that unites all ages.

Creating Lasting Memories Across Generations

Beyond the games, the food and music, the most touching aspect of the day was the connection formed between the young and the elderly. Our residents read stories to the children, sparking imagination and curiosity, while the students shared their own perspectives on modern Maltese life. The mutual exchange of knowledge and perspectives was a powerful reminder that  wisdom is not reserved for the elderly, nor is enthusiasm exclusive only to the young!

As the visit drew to a close smiles and heartfelt goodbyes filled the room. The students left with a deeper appreciation for their heritage, while our residents returned to Simblija full hearts, knowing they had played a role in keeping traditions alive.
